Ordered by what it’s for
Every working in the book, gathered by what you actually came for — money, protection, love, grief, courage. Come with your trouble, whatever it is, and there will be a page for it.
A book of workings, kept by hand
Everything I know, set down in one place and ordered by what it is for. Come with your trouble, whatever it is, and there will be a page for it — worked to the moon, to your body’s own calendar, or simply to how you arrived tonight.
A whole book of workings · yours forever
Most books of this kind either frighten you or sell you something — a shelf of expensive things, a lineage you do not have, a version of yourself you have not earned. This one does neither.
It takes for granted that you have water, a bowl, paper and a pen, a mirror, and somewhere to wash, since nearly every house does. The whole list comes to less than a bunch of flowers, and where you have not got a thing, the page tells you the plainer way.
Nearly all of it was handed to me in kitchens, over tea, by women who would have laughed at the word teaching. I have only set it down in order — and left room at the back for your own hand.
What’s inside
A library of workings ordered by what they are for, three ways in, a cupboard and a still room — and pages left blank for your own.
Every working in the book, gathered by what you actually came for — money, protection, love, grief, courage. Come with your trouble, whatever it is, and there will be a page for it.
Her phases worked out inside the book, and seven days for the seven old planets. You need not believe a planet is doing anything to find the shape of it useful.
Your month turns in four seasons, and your bleed is the turning of them. Or skip all of it — say how you are tonight, and be handed the page for that.
Tell it what is on your shelf and it will show you your craft. The old cupboard of waters and oils, the herbs drying from the beam — and a plainer way whenever you have not got the thing.
The little ways, the words said over a shoulder while the tea was poured, and the sigil wheel — say it once, then let it become a shape.
Write your own workings and keep them here, with a journal for your pages. Saved to your account, to return to for as long as you keep a book like this.
Every woman who has ever kept a book like this began with a kitchen, a glass of water and a great deal of doubt — and that was enough for all of them.
I did not write this to make the craft sound rare, or to send you out for a list of expensive things. Nothing in it asks for more than a house already holds, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling something. If you have been circling this a long while, you do not need to be ready. Start tonight, with water, and a great deal of doubt.
